The Classical Studies Honours Specialisation is a fourth year of undergraduate study which allows you to delve deeper into the fascinating world of Greek and Roman Antiquity by taking advanced coursework modules and writing a 20,000 word thesis on a topic of personal interest under the supervision of a member of academic staff. The Honours year can act either as capstone to an undergraduate degree or as a pathway to Higher Degree Research. It is a prestigious qualification which sets you apart from BA degree graduates by demonstrating your aptitude to undertake independent research and writing, skills which are highly valued by employers in a wide range of fields.

Learning Outcomes

  1. think critically and analyse key debates and themes in Classical Studies and its legacy in the modern world;
  2. pose a significant research question relating to Classical Studies;
  3. investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
  4. communicate their research and its findings through oral and written means.

Admission Requirements

Either:

a major or equivalent in Ancient Greek

written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis 

Or:

a major or equivalent in Ancient History

written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis 

Or:

a major or equivalent in Classical Studies

written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis

Or:

a major or equivalent in Latin

written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis

Or:

an approved combination of minors in Classical Studies, Ancient History, Greek, Advanced Ancient Greek, Latin, or Advanced Latin

written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis

Requirements

This Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:


24 units from the completion of courses from the following list:

CLAS4022 - Classics Now! (12 units) [Semester 1]

CLAS4008 - Topics in Classics (12 units) [Semester 2]


24 units from the completion of the following course:

THES4105 - Thesis (24 units)
