This specialisation provides insights into key theories, policies and approaches to development policy both within nations and at the global level. It will provide students with the skills and knowledge to engage in the major development debates, and appreciate the historical, cultural, political and economic contexts that shape global development policy. In this specialisation, students will examine the roles and approaches of key development actors, both state and non-state, and the ways in which they shape both national and global policy. Core courses provide students with solid understanding of theories and debates in development, and introduces advanced policy analysis skills for analysing policies.
Options within this specialisation cover a range of topics such as the Sustainable Development Goals, poverty reduction, social policy, political institutions, gender, and human security.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Demonstrate deep knowledge and understanding of key debates and thinking in the field of development policy in order to analyse, synthesise and communicate complex, political and institutional development challenges from multiple perspectives.
  2. Reflect critically on and engage in key theoretical debates in the field of development policy
  3. Contribute to and influence sophisticated policy debates around current development challenges. 
  4. Develop innovative development policy recommendations to complex problems in changing policy environments

Students wishing to complete the Global Development Policy specialisation are strongly encouraged to take POGO8072 Development Theories and Themes, particularly if they have notĀ studiedĀ global/international development previously.
