Program Requirements

The Master of Laws in Migration Law requires completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

12 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:

LAWS8651 Fundamentals of Australian Migration Law

LAWS8652 Administrative Decision Making in Australian Migration Law

A minimum of 6 units from completion of courses from the following list: [LIST A]

LAWS8654 Comparative Migration Law

LAWS8655 Advanced Comparative Migration Law

LAWS8657 Research Skills (Migration)

A Maximum of 18 units from completion of courses from the following list: [LIST B]

LAWS8653 Contemporary issues in Migration Law

LAWS8656 Refugee Law and Practice in Australia

LAWS8658 Skilled and Business Migration

LAWS8659 The Family in Australian Migration Law

LAWS8650 Applied Australian Migration Law and Practice

A maximum of 12 units from completion of further 8000-level courses from the subject area LAWS Law

Admission Requirements

Either one of the following qualifications with a weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent:

Bachelor of Laws

Bachelor of Laws (Honours)

Graduate Certificate of Australian Migration Law and Practice

Juris Doctor

Or a Graduate Certificate of Law with a weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent as well as registration as a Migration Agent.

The ANU Master of Laws in Migration Law will give students the knowledge, understanding and insight for professional success in the demanding and complex environment of migration law. This professional program is designed to expand legal expertise in a rapidly changing complex area of law, providing students with a nuanced understanding of migration law in the domestic and global context.

Students will address recent developments in domestic and international law and professional practice. The program includes research, principles and methods applicable to this area of work and allows students to undertake both a research project and a practice component.

This online program is designed to assist students to structure their engagement with their study around work or family commitments.

We provide specialist training and knowledge to equip students with the critical tools needed to engage with migration law and work as migration law specialist practitioners, policy makers and academics.

Because the program is online it will not be registered on CRICOS for student visa eligibility.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills and knowledge to:

1. Demonstrate comprehensive specialised knowledge of migration legislation, case law and policy in Australia;

2. Review, analyse and apply knowledge of different legal and immigration systems in order to explain forces that have shaped those systems;

3. Communicate complex legal concepts effectively both verbally and in writing to a broad audience;

4. Apply knowledge and understanding of migration law in a variety of contexts in an analytical and creative manner ;

5. Demonstrate knowledge of continuous self-directed learning principles;

6. Design and complete an independent research which demonstrates an ability in critical analysis problem solving and ethical professional practice at an advanced level

7. Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex client information, client problems, legislation and regulation to develop appropriate solutions for clients.

After you have accepted your offer you will be emailed your password and uni ID.  You must then follow the instructions provided here and enrol online through ISIS. 

It is the student's responsibility to ensure the program requirements are met and that all compulsory and required courses are completed so that the program can be awarded.





About this degree

How to choose courses and enrol

  1. Consult the program requirements on the Programs and Courses page to see which courses you can choose. In the LLM in Migration Law you must ensure that at least 36 of your 48 units are Migration Law courses.
  2. Look at the Masters program timetable to see when courses are offered and which stream they are relevant for.
  3. Check that you meet the prerequisites for the course.
  4. Enrol in the course on ISIS.

Commencement date

Each student will commence their program on a different date depending on what courses they have chosen. Please see the timetable. Most of the Migration Law courses are semester-based and commence in either Semester 1 (February) or Semester 2 (July).

Online Study

Migratrion Law coursees are offered online. Students are expected to devote 10-12 hours per week participating online in Live Classrooms on Adobe Connect, participating in group activities and in individual research and studying.

Attendance at face-to-face intensives

You must attend 100% of scheduled classes for courses offered in intensive mode, whether they are held on weekdays or weekends. We assume you have taken into account all work, family, religious and other commitments if you enrol in a non-online course.

Course Materials

Course outlines on your Wattle sites will describe the text books and reading materials you will need to access.  You can buy text books at the on-campus Coop Bookshop. reading Guides are now often distributed as e-bricks via the Wattle course site.

Timetable

The Masters Program timetable for 2015 is now available on the ANU College of LawMasters Program site.

Status/Credit

If you wish to apply for status (credit/advanced standing) for courses you have studied at another university, you must complete an Application for Status form and submit it to the LLM Program Administrator, along with an official transcript of your previous studies and relevant course descriptions and outlines. You will not be granted status for courses that have already counted towards a completed degree or award.

Email

All email correspondence will be conducted with your University Webmail account. You can access this email account at http://students.anu.edu.au/ and clicking on the Webmail icon. There exists the facility to redirect your university email to a preferred account. You can do this at:http://itservices.anu.edu.au/email/

WATTLE (online learning environment)

Convenor correspondence and course materials will be provided through the individual course page on WATTLE. Access to WATTLE will open approximately 6 weeks before the course starts. If you are enrolled in the course you should receive an email to confirm when the site is live.

Course Study Guide

A course study guide will be produced for each course and posted to Wattle about 4-6 weeks prior to the commencement of the course. This document contains information on the course including: course lecture outline; textbook requirements; reading requirements; assessment details; and policy information.
