Program Requirements
The Master of Laws in Migration Law requires completion of 48 units, which must consist of:
12 units from completion of the following compulsory courses:
LAWS8651 Fundamentals of Australian Migration Law
LAWS8652 Administrative Decision Making in Australian Migration Law
A minimum of 6 units from completion of courses from the following list: [LIST A]
LAWS8654 Comparative Migration Law
LAWS8655 Advanced Comparative Migration Law
LAWS8657 Research Skills (Migration)
A Maximum of 18 units from completion of courses from the following list: [LIST B]
LAWS8653 Contemporary Issues in Migration Law
LAWS8656 Refugee Law and Practice in Australia
LAWS8658 Skilled and Business Migration
LAWS8659 The Family in Australian Migration Law
LAWS8650 Applied Australian Migration Law and Practice
LAWS8301 Graduate Research Unit
A maximum of 12 units from completion of further 8000-level courses from the subject area LAWS Law
Admission Requirements
Either one of the following qualifications with a weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent:
Bachelor of Laws
Bachelor of Laws (Honours)
Graduate Certificate of Australian Migration Law and Practice
Juris Doctor
Or a Graduate Certificate of Law with a weighted average mark of at least 50 per cent as well as registration as a Migration Agent.
All applicants must meet the University’s English Language Admission Requirements for Students

The ANU Master of Laws in Migration Law will give students the knowledge, understanding and insight for professional success in the demanding and complex environment of migration law. This professional program is designed to expand legal expertise in a rapidly changing complex area of law, providing students with a nuanced understanding of migration law in the domestic and global context.
Students will address recent developments in domestic and international law and professional practice. The program includes research, principles and methods applicable to this area of work and allows students to undertake both a research project and a practice component.
This online program is designed to assist students to structure their engagement with their study around work or family commitments.
We provide specialist training and knowledge to equip students with the critical tools needed to engage with migration law and work as migration law specialist practitioners, policy makers and academics.
Because the program is online it will not be registered on CRICOS for student visa eligibility.

Upon successful completion, students will have the skills and knowledge to:
1. Demonstrate comprehensive specialised knowledge of migration legislation, case law and policy in Australia;
2. Review, analyse and apply knowledge of different legal and immigration systems in order to explain forces that have shaped those systems;
3. Communicate complex legal concepts effectively both verbally and in writing to a broad audience;
4. Apply knowledge and understanding of migration law in a variety of contexts in an analytical and creative manner ;
5. Demonstrate knowledge of continuous self-directed learning principles;
6. Design and complete an independent research which demonstrates an ability in critical analysis problem solving and ethical professional practice at an advanced level
7. Investigate, analyse and synthesise complex client information, client problems, legislation and regulation to develop appropriate solutions for clients.

It is the
student's responsibility to ensure the program requirements are met and that
all compulsory and required courses are completed so that the program can be
awarded.

How to choose courses and enrol
- Consult the program
requirements on the Programs and Courses page to see which courses you can
choose. For the Master of Laws in Migration Law you must ensure that at least 36 of your 48 units are Migration Law courses and that you complete the compulsory courses.
- Look at the Graduate Coursework Timetable to see what courses are offered and which specialisation they belong to.
- Choose
a course(s). You can enrol in your whole year's worth of courses, or one
course at a time. Domestic students have 5 years to complete the
program. A full time study load is 18-24 units per half year period.
- Check that you meet the prerequisite(s) for the course.

Most students will commence with either one or both of the two compulsory courses: LAWS8651 Fundamentals of Australian Migration Law and LAWS8652 Administrative Decision Making in Australian Migration Law. Please

Online courses
All Migration law courses are all held online and attendance is not compulsory. You may however, choose to complete one or two courses outside of migration law for which compulsory attendance may be required. ie. at a 4 day intensive. Please see the timetable for a full list of masters courses on offer.
A Course Study Guide will be published for each course on the Wattle course site. This document contains information on the course including: course lecture outline; textbook requirements; reading requirements; assessment details; and policy information.
Reading Guides or E-Bricks will available on the Wattle course site.
You
will be given access to
the Wattle course site approximately 24-48 hours after you enrol in the course, provided the site is opened. Sites are generally opened a week prior to the commencement of the online course. Course Study Guides, course
materials, ebricks,
resources, discussion forums, quizzes and online activities can all be
accessed
via each Wattle course site. Assessments are submitted
electronically via
the Wattle course site.
If you wish to apply for status (credit/advanced standing) for courses you have studied at another university, you must complete an Application for Status form and submit it to the LLM Program Administrator, along with an official transcript of your previous studies and relevant course descriptions and outlines. You will not be granted status for courses that have already counted towards a completed degree or award.
