After a brief overview of the history of French cinema, the course will study films by some of the leading French directors of the past half century. Consideration will be given to the innovations of the Nouvelle Vague, with respect to both the French and Hollywood traditions. The cinéma d'auteur approach will be followed through a study of different styles of film-making.
Oral presentation (25%), 2,000 word essay (50%) and two-hour examination (25%).
