This course allows students to build on the language skills and understandings they have developed in AUST1001 to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in an Indigenous Australian language, and to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the relation between language, culture and society in the community of the speakers.


This course may be offered on campus or on-country (location(s) to be advised for each offering), and delivered over the course of a semester or in intensive mode. This course is available for cross-Institutional enrolment.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Upon successful completion of this course, student will be able to:
  1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the grammar and lexicon of the Indigenous Australian language.
  2. Demonstrate communicative skills allowing them to discuss some topics confidently in the Indigenous language
  3. Read and understand texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  4. Write texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  5. Discuss socio-cultural, traditional and modern practices specific to the Indigenous Australian community speaking the language concerned.
  6. Reflect on how their understanding of Indigenous Australian languages has deepened.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

3-4 weekly contact hours (including online contact hours) and 6-7 hours per week outside classes.


In two week intensive mode there will be 4 contact hours/day and 5 hours per day outside class for the two weeks, plus 40 hours preparation for final assessment.


Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed AUST1001. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed AUST6008.
