Students build on the language skills and understandings they have developed in AUST6008 to develop speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in an Indigenous Australian language, to develop a deeper knowledge and understanding of the relation between language, culture and society in the community of the speakers and to reflect on the place of Indigenous Australian languages in Australia.

This course may be offered on campus or on-country (location(s) to be advised for each offering), and delivered over the course of a semester or in intensive mode. This course is available for cross-Institutional enrolment.

Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required,  the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

Disclaimer: Applicants are advised that due to circumstances beyond the University's control (for example, specific  security concerns and health crises) it may not be possible for students to commence or complete this course. An alternative lesson plan will be arranged to fulfil the course requirements.

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge of the grammar and lexicon of the Indigenous Australian language.
  2. Demonstrate communicative skills allowing them to discuss some topics in the Indigenous language
  3. Read and understand texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  4. Write texts in an Australian Indigenous language
  5. Discuss socio-cultural, traditional and modern practices specific to the Indigenous Australian community speaking the language concerned.
  6. Reflect on how their understanding of Indigenous Australian languages has deepened.

How to enrol into a course offered in a non-standard session (Summer Session, Autumn Session, Winter Session, Spring Session):
  1. Complete an Enrolment Variation Form (including the Course Code, Class number and Session).
  2. Submit the Form via email to ug.students.cass@anu.edu.au or in person to the CASS Student Office. If the course requires permission, please include an email from the Course Convenor.
  3. Submit your request as early as possible prior to the commencement of the relevant Session, allowing up to 3 weeks for processing.
  4. Please take note of the Overload Policy, which may apply if you are enrolling in a non-standard session.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 36 hours of contact:  36 hours of seminars and/or online class time.
b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

To enrol in this course you must have completed AUST1001. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course. Incompatible with AUST6009.
