This course provides a detailed investigation into the history, working and challenges/opportunities facing the regional security order in Southeast Asia. The course is designed to examine and contrast the internal dynamics of the regional security order building with external pressures to build a fuller understanding of how ASEAN has developed and how that development shapes its current character. The course also provides an opportunity to assess the contemporary significance of ASEAN to other actors in world politics, regional political elites and the wider citizenry of Southeast Asia.
