This course offers an introductory study of the language, giving grounding in basic communication skills, vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar sufficient to become functional at an elementary level, both in written and spoken French (e.g. learning tenses necessary to operate in the past, present and future). It introduces the reading of authentic short texts and provides listening practice to enable students to deal with everyday situations as well as to develop knowledge and understanding of French culture and society.

- Communicate orally at an elementary level (e.g. expressing relationships, abilities and desires, talking about activities and the environment, describing states of being and actions in the present past and future).
- Understand information in short written texts and simple conversations.
- Write mostly simple sentences (statements, negative, interrogative).
- Understand basic grammatical concepts including conjugations, use of tenses (notably as compared to English).
- Read short authentic texts and understand short cinematographic extracts.
- Appreciate aspects of French life and society through exposure to authentic material.
Indicative Assessment
Two in-class written tests (one 50 mins and one two hours): each 25% (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6)
Two in-class listening comprehension tests (50 mins): 10% and 15% (Learning Outcomes 2, 3, 6)
Two in-class oral assessments (30-50 mins): 10% and 15% (Learning Outcomes 1, 2, 5, 6)
The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload
