This specialisation is available only to students undertaking the Bachelor of International Relations degree program.
The search for security drives many of the actors in the international system. This minor examines the breadth of the international politics of security by looking at how we determine and respond to threats, and how we pursue security in international relations today. It will engage with the traditional security agendas of the nation-state, and also examine how climate change, human development, transnational terrorism, the global economy, energy resources and other issues affect our capacity to be secure.
Learning outcomes
Students who complete this minor will have the skills and knowledge to:
- Identify and understand the different theories of international security
- Understand the historical development of dominant ideas of security and the challenges to them
- Have a thorough understanding of the major threats facing the international system and the different approaches to addressing them
- Demonstrate a capacity to identify, and critically reflect upon, contemporary policies of security
