The aim of this course is to prepare students for undertaking the thesis component of the Master of Diplomacy (Advanced) or Professional Doctorate. All students will learn appropriate methodology as required for research in diplomacy in small reading groups and seminars facilitated by academics at the Asia-Pacific College of Diplomacy (APCD). In addition, each student will participate in one-to-one discussions with APCD academics on readings selected jointly by the academic and student that will form a foundation for a future thesis. The emphasis will be on active interaction between the student group and with the academics.

Indicative Assessment
The course is worth 25% of the coursework component (which comprises 50% of the DDiplS). To achieve the DDiplS degree students must: achieve a pass grade minimum in the Diplomatic Doctoral Research Preparation course; and complete and pass each course in the coursework component.
Essays will be worth 60% and exams, 40%.

The course assumes students will have a sound knowledge of diplomacy as a practice and field of study from ancient to contemporary times. They will require skills that support academic study at a graduate level, including a capacity to understand the methods and approaches required to research diplomacy and to appreciate how these approaches are adopted, or not adopted, by scholars of diplomatic studies.
