This studio-based course explores the extensive range of materials, tools, mediums and techniques used by contemporary painters. Students will enhance and extend their practice by experimenting with new materials and considering the ways in which the material qualities of their painting contributes to the meaning or effect of the work. A range of techniques will be demonstrated by artists, technicians and representatives from paint manufacturers. Occupational health and safety instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. Demonstrate a knowledge of a wide range of processes, techniques and materials of painting;
  2. Apply appropriate painting skills and knowledge to the development of their individual studio work;
  3. Experiment with working processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively;
  4. Reflect on the role of materiality in the generation of meaning and affect in painting.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice and 6 hours per week independent studio practice.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed ARTV2508 or ARTV2504 or ARTV2004.
