This studio-based course explores the extensive range of materials, tools, mediums and techniques used by contemporary painters. Students will enhance and extend their practice by experimenting with new materials and considering the ways in which the material qualities of their painting contributes to the meaning or effect of the work. A range of techniques will be demonstrated by artists, technicians and representatives from paint manufacturers. Work health and safety (WHS) instruction is an integral part of this course.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- demonstrate a knowledge of a wide range of processes, techniques and materials of painting;
- apply appropriate painting skills and knowledge to the development of their individual studio work;
- experiment with working processes by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively;
- reflect on the role of materiality in the generation of meaning and affect in painting; and
- devise and execute an independent body of work.

School of Art & Design studio courses have a limited enrolment capacity. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible to maximise the opportunity of securing a place.

Semester mode
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice; and
b) 82 hours of independent studio practice, reading and writing.
Intensive mode

a) 48 hours of contact: intensive classes held over a period of 2-3 weeks, comprising lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice.
b) 82 hours of independent student practice and research.
