This course is designed for advanced level Chinese language students as an introductory course in Chinese-English translation. The course is intended to equip students with some basic translation skills and/or serve as a foundation course for more advanced Chinese-English translation courses. Students will learn how to use the most frequently used on line tools critically, how to judge and critique the quality of an accomplished translation task, and have some experience in handling translation issues in real life.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 
  1. know the basic skills in translating from Chinese into English and vice versa;
  2. critique the quality of an accomplished translation task; 
  3. be familiar with some frequently used online translation tools; 
  4. apply what they have learned in the course to complete their own translation.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity.
