This course is designed for advanced level Chinese language students as an introductory course in Chinese-English translation. The course is intended to equip students with some basic translation skills and/or serve as a foundation course for more advanced Chinese-English translation courses. Students will learn how to use the most frequently used on line tools critically, how to judge and critique the quality of an accomplished translation task, and have some experience in handling translation issues in real life.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: 

  1. comprehend and examine the basic skills in translating from Chinese into English and vice versa; 
  2. evaluate the quality of an accomplished translation task with consistent criteria; 
  3. be familiar with some frequently used online translation tools; 
  4. justify and evaluate their own methods of translation.

1. Midterm exam 20% (Learning outcomes 1, 2)

3. Assignments 40% (Learning outcomes 1, 2, 3, 4)

4. Quizzes 10% (Learning outcomes 3, 4)
