This course continues with the development of listening and reading comprehension skills and with the development of oral and written communication. This includes a review and extension of basic Hindi grammar and vocabulary, and training in and reflection on language learning strategies. The course focuses also on the study of a range of texts - appropriate to the language level - about life and cultures of Hindi speaking communities. Topics covered include, talking about events in the past and describing habits and travel, ongoing actions and activities such as cooking and preparing foods, future activities such as making travel plans, telling the time and understanding Indian calendar systems, discussing possible and probably events in relation to urban and rural life, language forms for expressing potential capabilities and discussing abilities and skills. Furthermore, the course engages students in exploring opportunities in the area of intercultural communication and the understanding the cultures of Hindi speaking communities.

2. To be able to produce and comprehend various types of simple sentences/ expressions.

3. To be able to communicate in Hindi in situations involving every day life and limited topics.

4. To have obtained further basic knowledge about Indian cultures and peoples.

5. To have developed good self-study skills for Hindi language learning.

6. Demonstrate generic skills, e.g., critical thinking, written and oral communication, teamwork.

Other Information

All students with previous 'language experience or exposure' are required to take a language placement test to determine their language proficiency in order to ensure enrolment into the language course at the most appropriate level. 

 

The Course Convenor, in consultation with the Language Convenor will move students into an appropriate level course if students are deemed to be of a different proficiency level. Students are also encouraged to consult their course convenors immediately upon if they find that their proficiency level differs from that expected by the course.


As language courses are sequential, this may mean that students can only commence their language course in the following semester.

Indicative Assessment

Three outside-class written assignments (each 600 word equivalent) – 1800 words - 45%
Four quizzes (100 words each) – 400 words – 10%
One 1-hour in-class mid-semester test - 15%
One 5 minute final oral presentation - 15%
One 1-hour in-class final-semester test - 15%

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course students must have completed HIND1100 or a language placement proficiency test. Students cannot enrol in this course if they have already completed HIND1009 or HIND6200.
