This course explores approaches to painting via processes of drawing, collage, photography and digital imaging, and emphasises the role of colour in composition. A series of exercises and projects students will learn the basic terminology and principles of painting eg: the dynamics of composition, the relations between picture plane and picture space, between colour and tone, illusion and materiality etc. Suitable for beginners and Painting majors.
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of a range of approaches to
composition and pictorial design;
- Show a creative exploration of painting materials and processes;
- Show basic awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course.

Workload130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice; and b) 82 hours of independent studio practice, reading and writing.
