Research Topics in Japanese: International Relations & Politics (JPNS6025)
This course is designed for students with high level advanced Japanese language competency. As a Japanese language course, it is primarily a readings course focusing on improving the students' ability to read authentic Japanese texts in the related areas. This course serves two purposes. First, it fills a role as a Japanese language course between the advanced group stage and the independent research stage. Second, it allows substantive investigation into the discipline and issues of Japanese law, international relations and/or economics. The focus and topics of the course may vary depending on the students’ interests and needs.
 
This course will be useful to students interested in translation, current Japanese politics and society issues, and careers involving Japan in the area of law, international relations and/or economics.
 

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

On satisfying the requirements of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills at an Independent level of Japanese to:
1. Evaluate key concepts and issues on Japanese international relations and politics. 
2. Engage on an academic level with authentic Japanese texts on related issues.
3. Demonstrate near-native level of language competence and independent research skills in Japanese.
4. Present sustained academic arguments with confidence on a variety of topical issues related to Japanese international relations and politics, with a nuanced understanding of the broader academic discourses.

Students who successfully complete this course will typically achieve a level of proficiency roughly equivalent to JLPT N1-2 to N3-2, depending on their performance and degree of engagement.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

This course will be delivered in a seminar format (3 hours per week). The total workload for the course is 130 hours, including in class time and independent study.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have previously completed 12 units of JPNS6505, JPNS6506, JPNS6507, JPNS6508, JPNS6024, JPNS6512, JPNS6514 or JPNS6513, with a grade at least 60 (CR) or above, or have been permitted entry based on the results of the Japanese language placement test. Incompatible with JPNS3024.
