Special Topic for 2018: Contemporary PropertyThis topic explores the concept of property in a number of contemporary contexts. The topic begins with a theoretical analysis of property before moving on to examine notions of property and ownership in the context of title fraud, land grabs, housing affordability, Air BnB rentals and their regulation by the state, foreign investment and community displacement, cultural appropriation in the context of Indigenous art and culture and social media , artificial intelligence, virtual reality and identity. This topic should appeal to students from a wide range of backgrounds and interests. It is ostensibly a search for a unified definition of property, but it also involves a deep examinations of the ways in which notions of property and ownership can be challenged within different contexts.
