This Special Topics course will cover a specific material in dynamic programming and stochastic processes as they apply to economics.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of dynamic programming techniques from introductory dynamics to stochastic dynamic programming.
  • Learn in depth about the theory of stochastic processes and their applications to economics.
  • Be able to incorporate programming and mathematics into a set of economic models that gives rise to applications.
  • Learn the foundational applications of dynamic programming techniques and Markov processes such as optimal savings rates, job search and asset pricing.

Indicative Assessment

Specified by Convenor (will have at least 2-3 assessments pieces, with the first assessment scheduled and with feedback received by week 6).

Assumed Knowledge

The course assumes basic knowledge of mathematical analysis, linear algebra and probability theory.
