Drawing on the declaration "All artists borrow, great artists steal" this studio-based course explores the diverse ways in which painters have drawn on influences from artists from one another, from other times, and other cultures. This is a studio-based course supplemented by lectures and seminars exploring interesting examples of this kind of cross-fertilization across the history and contemporary practice of painting. In the studio students will explore the work of artists of interest to them as a means of enriching their own practice.
Work health and safety (WHS) instruction is an integral part of this course.

  1. demonstrate and describe an exploration of a range of processes, techniques, and materials of painting drawn from historical and/or contemporary precedents;
  2. apply appropriate painting skills and knowledge to the development of their individual interests;
  3. reflect on the role of materiality in the generation of meaning and affect in painting; and
  4. experiment with working processes by thinking creatively, critically, and reflectively.

School of Art & Design studio courses have a limited enrolment capacity. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible to maximise the opportunity of securing a place.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice; and
b) 82 hours of independent studio practice, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed any two of the following courses: ARTV2506, ARTV2507, ARTV2508 or ARTV2509. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV6507.
