This course will introduce students to the study of the Turkish language, starting with the Turkish alphabet, pronunciation and spelling.  Students will gain an understanding of Turkish people and culture and learn basic vocabulary for use in daily conversations and the reading of basic texts. Students will acquire knowledge of Simple Continuous and Past Tenses together with several grammatical rules and an understanding of Turkish sentence structure. No previous knowledge of the Turkish language is required.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. demonstrate knowledge of the alphabet, spelling and pronunciation of the Turkish language and familiarity with vowel harmony;
  2. communicate in everyday life situations in Turkish within a range of selected topics;
  3. write and understand simple short sentences and read passages of moderate length in Turkish;
  4. demonstrate basic grammatical concepts including genitive construction, imperative and optative moods and use of Present Continuous and Simple Past tenses as appropriate to the Turkish language; and
  5. explain aspects of Turkish culture and society with reference to related texts and cases.

  1. 6 Course Workbook Exercises (3% each) (18) [LO 1,3,4,5]
  2. 2 In-class Quizzes, 30 min each (6% each) (12) [LO 1,3,4]
  3. Mid-semester Written Exam 1 hour (20) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  4. Final Exam (oral component: 10 min - 20%; written component: 2 hours - 30%) (50) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
