Delivery of this course will vary from student to student. Contact your course convener or supervisor to see if there is an on campus activity.

Students will undertake an individual project within one of the many cutting edge research groups in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Project areas include black hole phenomena, galactic archaeology, astronomical instrumentation, stellar and planetary astronomy, and the structure and evolution of the cosmos.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Plan and engage in an independent and sustained investigation of a chosen research topic supervised by an academic staff member.
  2. Systematically identify relevant theory and observations in the chosen field, relate these to appropriate analysis methods and techniques, and draw critical conclusions.
  3. Carry out observations, theoretical simulations, develop instrumentation, or utilize existing data to address a particular research question, at a standard consistent with current published research in the field.
  4. Accurately document and analyse telescope observations or theoretical simulations and research findings
  5. Present research findings, both orally and in written form.

Indicative Assessment

  1. A written report on the research project and results (80) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  2. Oral presentation of the project and results (20) [LO 2,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester per 6 units of enrolment including:

  • Face-to-face component as negotiated with the supervisor
  • Independent study 10 - 40 hours per week depending on the units of enrolment per semester.

To enrol in the course you must be currently enrolled in the Master of Astronomy & Astrophysics (Advanced), the Master of Science in Astronomy & Astrophysics or the Master of Science (Advanced) in Astronomy & Astrophysics.
