Delivery of this course will vary from student to student. Contact your course convener or supervisor to see if there is an on campus activity.

The course is a specific research project under the supervision of a research scientist at ANU or at an affiliated research institute.  The research project consists of data gathering using appropriate state-of-the-art techniques and evaluation and interpretation of the data in the context of relevant theory and concepts.

Students identify a supervisor for their project after discussion with the Masters convenor.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Plan and engage in an independent investigation of a chosen research topic supervised by an academic;
  2. Identify relevant theory and concepts from the literature and relate these to their own research project;
  3. Apply relevant research techniques and methods for data collection and analysis;
  4. Evaluate and interpret obtained data within the framework of overarching research questions; and
  5. Communicate concepts and results clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.

Indicative Assessment

  1. The research project will be assessed after the first year of enrolment (mid-term assessment) and at the completion of the research project. Both assessments will consist of a Research log/lab book, and (10) [LO 1,3]
  2. Seminar, and (20) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  3. Written report on the research project (70) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

This can be taken as a variable unit course depending on the conceptual difficulty and research orientation as arranged between the student, convenor and supervisor before enrolling. The research project will be normally completed over 2 or more consecutive semesters.
