This course is a practical introduction to Gamilaraay, a heritage Indigenous Australian language whose custodians are reviving it . It is designed to develop basic speaking, listening, reading and writing skills at an introductory level, and to develop a knowledge and understanding of some elements of traditional and current culture, and the importance of language to the community.
This course may be offered on campus or off-campus (location(s) to be advised for each offering), and delivered over the course of a semester or in intensive mode. It may also be offered online. This course is available for cross-Institutional enrolment.
Students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation, including, where required, the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

- demonstrate a basic knowledge of the grammar and lexicon of Gamilaraay;
- demonstrate communicative skills allowing them to ask questions, give directions and discuss some topics in Gamilaraay;
- read, create and understand short texts in Gamilaraay; and
- carry out research on cultural, traditional and linguistics practices specific to Gamilaraay.
Student work will contribute to materials for Gamilaraay/Yuwalaraay language revival.

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the Academic Integrity . In rare cases where online submission using Turnitin software is not technically possible; or where not using Turnitin software has been justified by the Course Convener and approved by the Associate Dean (Education) on the basis of the teaching model being employed; students shall submit assessment online via ‘Wattle’ outside of Turnitin, or failing that in hard copy, or through a combination of submission methods as approved by the Associate Dean (Education). The submission method is detailed below.
Moderation of Assessment
Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.
Assessment Task 1

Weekly pre-class quizzes are online and have questions on material students are to read and understand before class. These quizzes can be repeated any number of times. They are designed to help you understand the material covered in that week. 5% is given for completing 9 of the 11 quizzes to a level of 75% by the due date. These quizzes can also be used later for practice and revision.

The weekly quiz has a time limit and covers material up to the previous class. Quizzes open at noon on Tuesday and close 6 am on Friday. 20% is for the best seven of the nine weekly quizzes.
Both the pre-class and weekly quizzes have a random selection from a large pool of questions, so each attempt will have a different set of questions.

Students read an allocated Gamilaraay text and upload an mp3 file. 15% is for the best seven of the weekly sound tasks.

Language revival discussions
Four lots of materials (text, videos, other) on language revival and associated topics are provided. Students are required to post a response to some material in each section every three weeks. Total is 10%, divided equally among the 4 instances.

There are two conversation tasks. The first is for 5 minutes and is 5%, the second for 10 minutes and is 15% .
You need to organise and practise with a partner. After greeting each other you will be presented with objects or visuals (pictures, videos) and you need to talk about them in Gamilaraay. The objects or visuals will be drawn from a set which will be provided well in advance of the conversation.
The criteria for marking the conversation are: correct pronunciation, use of a range of vocabulary and structures, intelligible in relevant Gamilaraay, fluency (i.e. reasonable speed and phrasing).
Assessment Task 6

This is a longer quiz worth 20%. It has a random set of questions drawn mainly from the later lessons. It will include a translation passage. It has a time limit of one hour and is to be done on Tuesday, June 9.
Assessment Task 7

Students are to write a text in Gamilaraay of 100 to 125 words, and provide an English translation.
The criteria are: the range of Gamilaraay structures and vocabulary used; the quality of the text, i.e. is it interesting and coherent.

The ANU expects staff and students to be familiar with the academic integrity principle and Academic Misconduct Rule, uphold high standards of academic integrity and act ethically and honestly, to ensure the quality and value of the qualification that you will graduate with.
The Academic Misconduct Rule is in place to promote academic integrity and manage academic misconduct. Very minor breaches of the academic integrity principle may result in a reduction of marks of up to 10% of the total marks available for the assessment. The ANU offers a number of online and in person services to assist students with their assignments, examinations, and other learning activities. You will be required to electronically sign a declaration as part of the submission of your assignment. Please keep a copy of the assignment for your records. Unless an exemption has been approved by the Associate Dean (Education) submission must be through Turnitin.
For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.
Individual assessment tasks may or may not allow for late submission. Policy regarding late submission is detailed below:
- Late submission not permitted. If submission of assessment tasks without an extension after the due date is not permitted, a mark of 0 will be awarded.
- Late submission permitted. Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension are penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.
Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.
The quizzes (pre-quiz, weekly quiz and final quiz) are automatically marked by Wattle. This means you have to be very careful with spelling and punctuation. By doing a number of pre-class/practice quizzes you will become familiar with the system. If there are errors in the questions please let the lecturer know.

Extensions and Penalties
Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure. Extensions may be granted for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.
Resubmission of Assignments
No resubmission (except pre-class quizzes which can be done as often as liked).
Distribution of grades policy
Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes.
Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
