SELT Survey Results

In Korean 2 students further develop their listening and reading comprehension skills and oral and written communication skills. Students can learn to recognise and apply in conversation and writing a broad range of sentence structures and tenses for everyday situations. Conversational situations covered in the course include one’s personal or family situation, leisure, shopping, education, and employment; effectively applying honorifics in conversation and writing. Studying in this course will also allow students to understand how cultural issues such as respect shown in relation to age influence how Korean is spoken.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Read and write the Korean alphabet with confidence.
  2. Use an active vocabulary of around 750 items.
  3. Recognise and apply in conversation and writing a broad range of sentence structures and tenses for everyday situations.
  4. Communicate in speech and writing on topics related, but not limited, to their personal or family situation, leisure, shopping, education, and employment; effectively apply honorifics in conversation and writing.
  5. Demonstrate a broad understanding of common socio-cultural sensitivities such as self-introduction in social setting and communicating with seniors.

Examination Material or equipment

Written exams:

Check internet connection. The students are not allowed to bring any materials (textbook, workbook, and any handouts) during exam time and prepare for regular paper with thin lines or without, a pen (pencil is NOT allowed) and their own mobile phone to take photos. No one is allowed to be with the student in the same space, and the student must not use ear plugs or headphones and must leave the camera and audio on. The student must make a note of the lecturer’s e-mail address to send photos of their handwritten exam.


Oral exams:

The students are required to read the oral exam information on Wattle and prepare some information related to the format before taking an oral exam.

The students are not allowed to bring any materials (textbook, workbook, and any handouts) during exam time.

Policies

ANU has educational policies, procedures and guidelines, which are designed to ensure that staff and students are aware of the University’s academic standards, and implement them. Assessment Requirements

The ANU is using Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website Students may choose not to submit assessment items through Turnitin. In this instance you will be required to submit, alongside the assessment item itself, hard copies of all references included in the assessment item.

Moderation of Assessment

Marks that are allocated during Semester are to be considered provisional until formalised by the College examiners meeting at the end of each Semester. If appropriate, some moderation of marks might be applied prior to final results being released.

Participation

Attendance is an essential component of this course. Students are required to attend five hours of class each week.

All students are also expected to engage fully in classroom exercises.

Mini-quiz

There are five mini-quizzes. Mini-quiz 1, 2, and 4 will be taken during the lecture and Mini-quiz 3 and 5 will be taken during the tutorial.

Homework

Homework is assigned from the workbook, and answer keys will be found at the end of the workbook. Students will be required to self-correct all homework according to the answer keys, using a contrasting color ink or pencil (e.g., blue & red ink). Correct answers should be checked off. The errors should be circled, and the correct form should be written next to an error. Grading will be based on completion and correction. Homework assignments must be submitted at the END of the day on the dates they are due. Late homework will NOT be accepted without proper documentation and/or prior arrangement.



NB: When students cannot take a tutorial quiz or submit homework, they must inform the instructor in advance along with relevant documentation.

Mid-term oral exam (Individual oral interview)

Each student will have an interview with the instructor on Zoom. During the interview, students should speak only Korean. The duration of the interview is approximately 5 minutes. All assessment criteria will be made available via Wattle in a timely manner. All performances will be recorded.

Mid-term written test (Chapter test)

The mid-term written test is a chapter test that assesses listening comprehension, vocabulary, grammar , reading comprehension, and writing.

The test will be conducted on Zoom, and the entire exam will be recorded. There will be NO make-up test unless proper documentation is provided.

Final oral exam (Skit)

Students in groups of 3 members each will create a skit on any socially appropriate topic, as long as they can make use of textbook grammar and vocabulary. Each group member should speak at least 10 complete sentences/lines, excluding exclamations and short utterances. Each team will have 15 minutes maximum to perform (with transition time, introduction of each member, Q&A sessions all included). All lines should be thoroughly memorized. Your performance will be recorded.

Value: 15 %

Final exam (written)

Taken online through Zoom. No one else is allowed near you during the test. You are not allowed to mute yourself, turn off the camera or use a virtual background, nor wear ear-pods or headsets, and if at any point during the exam you disappear from the screen, you will have to redo the test, so please ensure you have a reliable Internet connection. You are not allowed anything but regular paper (with lines or without) and a pen (pencil is NOT allowed), and you must email me your exam before leaving Zoom. Please use your own phone to take photos of your exam and send them to helen.chung@anu.edu.au before leaving the Zoom exam session.

Online Submission

Hardcopy Submission

For some forms of assessment (hand written assignments, art works, laboratory notes, etc.) hard copy submission is appropriate when approved by the Associate Dean (Education). Hard copy submissions must utilise the Assignment Cover Sheet. Please keep a copy of tasks completed for your records.

Late Submission

Late submission of assessment tasks without an extension is penalised at the rate of 5% of the possible marks available per working day or part thereof. Late submission of assessment tasks is not accepted after 10 working days after the due date, or on or after the date specified in the course outline for the return of the assessment item. Late submission is not accepted for take-home examinations.

Accepted academic practice for referencing sources that you use in presentations can be found via the links on the Wattle site, under the file named “ANU and College Policies, Program Information, Student Support Services and Assessment”. Alternatively, you can seek help through the Students Learning Development website.

Extensions and Penalties

Extensions and late submission of assessment pieces are covered by the Student Assessment (Coursework) Policy and Procedure The Course Convener may grant extensions for assessment pieces that are not examinations or take-home examinations. If you need an extension, you must request an extension in writing on or before the due date. If you have documented and appropriate medical evidence that demonstrates you were not able to request an extension on or before the due date, you may be able to request it after the due date.

Privacy Notice

The ANU has made a number of third party, online, databases available for students to use. Use of each online database is conditional on student end users first agreeing to the database licensor’s terms of service and/or privacy policy. Students should read these carefully. In some cases student end users will be required to register an account with the database licensor and submit personal information, including their: first name; last name; ANU email address; and other information. In cases where student end users are asked to submit ‘content’ to a database, such as an assignment or short answers, the database licensor may only use the student’s ‘content’ in accordance with the terms of service — including any (copyright) licence the student grants to the database licensor. Any personal information or content a student submits may be stored by the licensor, potentially offshore, and will be used to process the database service in accordance with the licensors terms of service and/or privacy policy. If any student chooses not to agree to the database licensor’s terms of service or privacy policy, the student will not be able to access and use the database. In these circumstances students should contact their lecturer to enquire about alternative arrangements that are available.

Distribution of grades policy

Academic Quality Assurance Committee monitors the performance of students, including attrition, further study and employment rates and grade distribution, and College reports on quality assurance processes for assessment activities, including alignment with national and international disciplinary and interdisciplinary standards, as well as qualification type learning outcomes. Since first semester 1994, ANU uses a grading scale for all courses. This grading scale is used by all academic areas of the University.
