Foreign Policy Analysis Specialisation

The Foreign Policy Analysis extension specialisation provides students with a rigorous account of the ways in which states and their representatives formulate and implement their foreign policy objectives. The specialisation explores how and why states have particular foreign policy priorities, the various parts of national government that interact in the foreign policy formulation process, and the different strategies that are available to states when seeking to realise their foreign policy goals. The specialisation also examines the importance of diplomacy and diplomats to the foreign policy agendas of states, identifying the history and contemporary practice of diplomacy.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Appreciate the different reasons why states have foreign policy goals

  2. Understand the foreign policy making process, and the different actors, institutions and levels of analysis that help explain this process

  3. Critically evaluate the role of diplomats within the policy making, and policy implementing, processes

  4. Understand the relationship between International Relations Theory and Foreign Policy Analysis as seperate but related fields of research
