Selected topics are available each year. The topics vary from year to year and are advertised on the MSI website in the first few weeks before the semester. Interested students should consult the course convener or attend the honours course meeting on the first Monday of each semester.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Advanced knowledge of a special topic in the mathematical sciences and its role in modern mathematics and applied contexts.
  2. Demonstrate accurate and efficient use of specific techniques from the mathematical sciences.
  3. Demonstrate capacity for mathematical reasoning through analysing, proving and explaining concepts from the mathematical sciences.
  4. To be able to critically read journal articles and conduct some independent research under the supervision of the lecturer.

Other Information

This course code is used for a variety of special topics classes offered to advanced mathematics students. The topics vary from semester to semester, and interested students should seek advice from the course convener. The specific assessment tasks will vary from topic to topic, but may include written problem sets; oral presentation of material; written reports; or seminar talks. The topics for each semester will be listed on the MSI webpage during O-Week for the relevant semester, and students will also find there details (location or Zoom link) for an informational meeting held at 10:00 am on the first Monday of the semester. All interested students are invited to attend the meeting. Information about permission codes will be provided then.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assessments and their weighting will vary depending on the nature of the topic but will minimally have two components. Specific details will be presented and negotiated with students in the first week of the semester/session. As a general indication: (null) [LO null]
  2. Three to five assignments or presentations (worth 15% - 9% each) (45) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  3. Final examination or project (55%) (55) [LO 1,2,3,4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload

The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the semester which will include face-to face components and self-directed study.

The exact workload distribution will vary from year to year and topic to topic. Face-to-face time commitments will be discussed and negotiated with students in the first week of the semester/session.
