Australian Indigenous Studies Minor

Australian Indigenous Studies is a recognised field of study, part of a global disciplinary network of Indigenous Studies.

The minor in Australian Indigenous Studies introduces students to the field of Australian Indigenous Studies, presenting students with opportunities to develop insight into the breadth, depth and diversity of First Peoples' knowledges and ways of knowing, the diverse perspectives and experiences of Australia’s First Peoples, and to deepen awareness of and respect for Indigenous Peoples' rights. The minor is interdisciplinary, meaning that it is possible to study courses in Australian Indigenous Studies with other courses that intersect Australian Indigenous Studies, such as: anthropology, art, environmental science, history, linguistics, music, or policy studies.

Learning Outcomes

  1. demonstrate an informed understanding of and insight into First Peoples' diverse perspectives on the past and shared histories since colonisation commenced in Australia;

  2. demonstrate an informed understanding of and insight into First Peoples' diverse knowledges and ways of knowing

  3. demonstrate an informed understanding and insight into First Peoples cultures, traditions and their continuities; and

  4. demonstrate insight and informed understanding of colonisation and its impacts of colonialism on First Peoples and Australian society broadly.
