The Language Studies Honours Specialisation gives you high-level preparation for professional life or a higher degree by research through the development of an advanced knowledge of the research principles, methods and theoretical concepts of language studies, and through the design and implementation of a research project, typically a thesis of up to 20,000 words, that develops new understandings or that provides solutions to complex problems. This specialisation is for student undertaking honours in modern European languages or linguistics. Students undertaking honours in the following languages will take the Asia Pacific Studies Honours Specialisation: Chinese, Hindi, Indonesian, Japanese, Korean, Sanskrit, Thai or Vietnamese.

Learning Outcomes

  1. pose a significant research question relating to language studies;
  2. investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to language studies, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
  3. communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.

A. For students working on a Linguistics project*:

1.  A major or equivalent in the following:

Or approval of the Linguistics Honours convenor

2.  The written approval of an identified supervisor for the thesis

B. For students working on a literary/cultural studies/film project or on a linguistics project within a language program (e.g. Hispanic Linguistics, French Linguistics):

1. Either:

A major or equivalent from the following list, with at least eight 2000- or 3000-level courses or equivalent:

This Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:

 

For students working on a Linguistics project:

12 units from completion of the following course:

LING4013 Essentials for Thesis Writing in Linguistics (12 units)

AND

12 units from completion of courses from the following list:

LING4103 Qualitative Research Methods in Language Studies (6 or 12 units)

LING4100 Quantitative Research Methods in Linguistics (6 or 12 units)

LING4106 Advanced Readings in Linguistics (6 or 12 units)

AND

24 units from completion of the following course:

THES4105 - Thesis (24 units)

 

For students working on a literary/cultural studies/film project:

12 units from completion of the following courses:

ENGL4020 Researching and Writing the Thesis: A Workshop (6 units)

ENGL4021 Creative Reading: Topics in Theory, Methodology and Interpretation (6 units)

AND

12 units from completion of the following course:

LANG4100 Transnational Cultural Studies (12 units)

AND

24 units from completion of the following course:

THES4105 - Thesis (24 units)


HONS4100 Final Honours Grade will be used to calculate the Class of Honours and the Mark. It will be calculated using the formula: S (mark x units) / S units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero
