This course allows individuals or small groups of students to study a Science topic abroad under the guidance of an ANU academic. Part of the course may be delivered at ANU before departure. Delivery of the course will potentially be a combination of lectures, field trips, workshops and/or practical work. The subject of topics will vary depending on offerings from the College of Science. 

Previous Topics have included (but not limited to) support of the New Colombo study abroad experiences:

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Understand specialist bodies of knowledge within the Science discipline.
  2. Understand and apply the scientific process to a specific field of Science.
  3. Effectively communicate scientific knowledge to a range of audiences via oral and written communication.

Work Integrated Learning


All students engage with WIL partners (internal/external) as a component of the course.

This course is run for specific programs and study tours on an ad hoc basis as opportunities are available. Opportunities are advertised throughout the year by Schools and/or by the College of Health and Medicine: published on the ANU College of Health & Medicine website when available.

To enrol in this course, students will need to send an expression of interest to subdean.science@anu.edu.au. Those students selected for enrolment will be informed and provided with a permission code.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assessment of this special topics course will depend on the nature and structure of the course topic. The details of the project and assessment items will be negotiated and agreed upon prior to formal enrolment in the course. (100) [LO 1,2,3]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students.
