This course is designed to further develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in the Spanish language at early to mid B1 level in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Specific targets include grammar, vocabulary, listening and speaking skills, and reading and writing skills. Attention is also devoted to pragmatic and sociocultural aspects of the language. Students will be encouraged to develop autonomous learning practices, control over their own learning strategies and reflect on their engagement with sources of information. The course is taught in Spanish.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- understand a range of short written, audio and visual texts in Spanish (such as television shows, short films, and/or music) and interpret them in relation to the language and cultures of the Hispanic world;
- communicate spontaneously and clearly, incorporating new vocabulary, grammar, pronunciation, pragmatic, and cultural components;
- produce well structured brief written texts and speech describing their past experiences, telling stories, and expressing views on a variety of topic; and,
- demonstrate broad expertise in critical thinking by extracting, synthesising and analysing information from a variety of basic cultural texts and communicating their own reactions, opinions and arguments.

Workload
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks, including recorded/online and tutorial activities, and
b) 82 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.
