Course first offered: 2027. Only available to students in the Bachelor of Philosophy, Neuroscience, and Psychology.

This course is specially designed to give students the opportunity to engage with active researchers and engage in substantial research tasks. Students will be integrated in a research team and get direct experience in core components of research activities, including literature review, project design, data collection, or analysis. Students will learn to take a transdisciplinary approach to real research problems, including critical assessment and evaluation in the context of current knowledge and frameworks. Students will take substantial steps from learning about research to becoming active, engaged participants with peers in a research community.

This course is designed to be flexible and allows for a broad range of research experiences for students. Research topics and groupings will vary year to year; BPNP convenors will make available a list of projects at the start of each semester.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Design and develop an independent and sustained investigation on a chosen transdisciplinary research topic.
  2. Systematically investigate the chosen research topic by identifying relevant sources, theories, and concepts that situate the project in the broader literature.
  3. Design and execute research methodology appropriate to both the subject matter and the discipline.
  4. Defend and critique advanced concepts underlying the special topic in the relevant discipline/s.
  5. Communicate advanced research concepts and contexts clearly and effectively both in writing and orally.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Assessments and their weighting will vary depending on the nature of the topic but will minimally have three components: (0) [LO null]
  2. Formative task/s (30) [LO 1,2,3]
  3. Group presentation on project (10) [LO 1,4,5]
  4. Summative Project Report (60) [LO 4,5]

While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. For additional information regarding Turnitin please visit the ANU Online website.

Workload
