China's rise in the 21st century has created both tremendous opportunities and terrific challenges for the outside world. This course prepares current and future public sector professionals to engage with counterparts in China, even as geopolitical and geoeconomic rivalries create new challenges for bilateral and multilateral relationships. The course familiarizes participants with key features of China’s political and policymaking architecture, including its political system, decision-making processes, and policy tools. The course also explores how other countries have sought to engage China in the past and considers how successful these efforts have been. Lastly, the course empowers participants to develop policies for interacting with China in the years to come.

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Critically discuss the basic workings of China’s party-state system, including recent changes.
