Program Requirements

The Master of Engineering in Electrical Engineering requires the completion of 96 units covering courses from the lists below. The 96 units must consist of:

  • 48 units from completion of Compulsory Courses
  • A minimum of 36 units satisfying the following requirements:
  • A minimum of 12 units from completion of Electrical Engineering Electives.
  • A maximum of 18 units from completion of Computing Electives.
  • A maximum of 6 units from completion of Breadth Electives.
  • A minimum of 24 units from completion of 8000-level Electrical Engineering Electives or 8000-level Computing Electives.
  • A maximum of 12 units from completion of Elective Courses offered by ANU.

Elective Courses

Every 6000-level and 8000-level course offered by ANU qualifies as an elective course. (Students must satisfy prerequisites of elective courses.)

Admission Requirements

Applicants must present the following:

  • A 4-year Bachelor of Engineering, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) or international equivalent with a minimum GPA of 5.0/7.0 in a cognate discipline

The GPA for a Bachelor program will be calculated from (i) a completed Bachelor degree using all grades and/or (ii) a completed Bachelor degree using all grades other than those from the last semester (or equivalent study period) of the Bachelor degree. The higher of the two calculations will be used as the basis for admission.

Ranking and English language proficiency: At a minimum, all applicants must meet program-specific academic/non-academic requirements, and English language requirements. Admission to most ANU programs is on a competitive basis. Therefore, meeting all admission requirements does not automatically guarantee entry. In line with the University's admissions policy and strategic plan, an assessment for admission may include competitively ranking applicants on the basis of specific academic achievement, English language proficiency and diversity factors. Applicants will first be ranked on a GPA ('GPA1') that is calculated using all but the last semester (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes. If required, ranking may further be confirmed on the basis of:

  • a GPA ('GPA2') calculated on the penultimate and antepenultimate semesters (or equivalent) of the Bachelor degree used for admission purposes; and/or
  • demonstrating higher-level English language proficiency

Prior to enrolment in this ANU program, all students who gain entry will have their Bachelor degree reassessed, to confirm minimum requirements were met.

Assessment of qualifications

Unless otherwise indicated, where an applicant has more than one completed tertiary qualification, ANU will calculate the GPA for each qualification separately. ANU will base assessment on the best GPA of all completed tertiary qualifications of the same level or higher.

ANU uses a 7-point Grade Point Average (GPA) scale. All qualifications submitted for admission at ANU will be converted to this common scale, which will determine if an applicant meets our published admission requirements. The annual indicative fee provides an estimate of the program tuition fees for international students and domestic students (where applicable). The annual indicative fee for a program is based on the standard full-time enrolment load of 48 units per year (unless the program duration is less than 48 units). Fees for courses vary by discipline meaning that the fees for a program can vary depending on the courses selected. Course fees are reviewed on an annual basis and typically will increase from year to year. The tuition fees payable are dependent on the year of commencement and the courses selected and are subject to increase during the period of study.

This two-year master qualification provides students with specialised knowledge and professional engineering skills to prepare them for a career in the broad context of electrical engineering. The program builds on ANU’s interdisciplinary engineering focus and research expertise to give students the required skills to address complex multi-disciplinary problems, while at the same time providing advanced technical knowledge in one or more of the fields power systems, renewable energy, and robotics and autonomous systems. In addition, due to the flexibility in the program, students can strengthen their skill in computer science, breadth courses, and elective courses across the University to obtain a unique degree for the job they are after.

About this degree

Study options

  • Typically students will enrol in 24 units per semester (four courses): a full-time load.
  •  Domestic students may enrol in fewer courses each semester, known as part-time study. Part-time study will extend the duration of the degree and there are limitations to how long you can take to complete the degree.
  • International students must always study full-time.
  • Students who wish to undertake an individual research project (ENGN8601 or ENGN8602) with an academic staff member at the School of Engineering, are recommended to consult with their prospective supervisor as early as possible to receive advice on completing courses which may be prerequisites for a particular individual project of interest. 


  • You should read the appropriate enrolment patterns on Master Degrees to see how many electives you may choose and where they fit in your program.
  • When choosing elective courses, check the course listing on Programs and Courses to ensure that you have the required and assumed knowledge before enrolling. If you don't, consider changing your planned enrolment to make sure you take the pre-requisite course.

Academic Advice

Important things to keep in mind when planning your enrolment

•    You need to enrol in courses in both First and Second Semester (you can change your Semester 2 courses all the way until July.)

•    Before selecting what courses to enrol in, you should read the CECC advice on enrolling.

•    On the Programs and Courses page of a course, please make sure you have selected the correct year from the drop down box at the top right of the page to ensure a course is offered in a particular year and to ensure you contact the correct Course Convener.


•    Students with a Bachelor of Engineering may be able to obtain exemption or credit for some of the introductory courses included in the masters program.

•    Applying for status involves a rigorous evidence-based check to determine whether we have sufficient confidence that you have achieved the learning outcomes of the course to a sufficient level.

•    Instructions on how to apply for credit/exemptions can be found here.

•    Any awarded course credit counts towards the unit requirements of your program and may shorten the length of your degree. If the duration of your degree is shortened, international students electronic Confirmation of Enrolment (eCoE) will be revised to reflect the new end date of the degree.
