This course represents a major piece of guided independent research on a topic agreed between the student and their supervisor. The 24-unit full semester weighting reflects the rigour of the training provided and the expectations in this class. Students must successfully complete EMDV8008 Research Proposal at a high standard to enrol in this course.
Research Thesis students are matched with supervisors and are supported to design and implement a project to answer their research question, to situate their findings in the context of a scholarly tradition and debate, and to communicate it clearly through both a written final thesis and a final public presentation to the department. The work must show evidence of wide reading and understanding, of critical analysis and/or appropriate use of advanced research methods, and be executed at a more advanced level than the major research project.
Students engage in collaborative, Convenor-led, peer review workshops, to refine and polish their writing and analysis. The culmination of the course is a final, polished research proposal document, and a public presentation to the department, that elaborates the research idea and approach. The course can be used for developing research theses related to topics relevant to Australia, the Asia-Pacific, or further afield. Successfully completing this course can provide the basis for an application to doctoral studies.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Pose a significant research question relating to environmental management and/or development problems
- Investigate this question creatively, critically, ethically, and independently, including through sophisticated use of appropriate theory and methodology as appropriate to Environmental Management and Development, and place these investigations in the context of the relevant intellectual tradition; and
- Communicate their research and its findings through an appropriate medium.

Workload
Students enrolling in a 12 unit load over two semesters will be expected to complete 260 hours per semester. Students enrolling in a 24 unit load over one semester will be expected to complete 520 hours per semester. This will include a minimum of 10 hours contact with the supervisor and a weekly one-hour seminar. It is the joint responsibility of the student and supervisor to arrange times for contact.
