This course aims to induct students into the historian's craft. In particular, it will assist students to undertake an historical research project using primary source materials, and to present their work in a form appropriate to its subject matter, purpose and audience. Through a program of seminars, workshops, site visits and feedback, each student will formulate an independent research proposal, conduct research using a variety of historical sources, and construct a research output. Students will be invited to reflect on questions of method, ethics, audience and presentation in historical research and communication. All students undertaking a history major will be required to complete this course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the skills and knowledge to:

1.      identify and select from a range of conceptual approaches to interpreting the past in designing a methodologically sound historical research proposal

2.       locate and interpret a wide variety of primary source materials and secondary literature relevant to that project

3.       provide and respond to feedback in the process of developing historical project work

4.       construct an evidence-based historical argument in a form suitable to its content, stated purpose and target audience

5.       reflect on and apply the discipline's ethical conventions

6.       'identify and relfect on the knowledge and skills developed in their study of History' (History Level 7 Threshold Learning Outcomes)

Indicative Assessment

  • Primary Source Evaluation (750 words) 20% (LO 2) 
  • Research Project Proposal (1000 words) 20% (LO 1, 3, 4 and 5)
  • Research Project (3000 words) – “Beta Test Version” 20% (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)  
  • Research Project (4000 words) – “Final Alpha Version”: 40% (LO 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6)
 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 29  contact hours over 12 weeks: 24 hours of seminars; 4 hours of site visits and 1 hour of individual consultation with a project supervisor b) 101 hours in independent student, research, reading and writing

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed 24 units of History (HIST) courses, (which may include EURO1004) or with the permission of the convenor. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed HIST2139/HIST6007.
