The overarching goal of this course is to help students understand their own potential to become the leader they would like to be and their own responsibilities in achieving this goal. The course emphasise personal development with the development of leadership capabilities as the vehicle to do so. This course has two primary content areas. A key focus is on making life choices i.e. what work excites learners, as well as understanding one's passions and responsibilities. The emphasis is less about being entitled to be a leader and more about how participants can become leaders that they themselves would like to be. This is a challenging question and gets to the heart of one's major life decisions. The second element supports the first and relates to the development of practical life skills e.g. managing stress, building positivity, mindsets and setting life goals
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Identify their leadership character strengths (Ask and remember)
- Recognize personal motivations and how they influence life decisions (Acquire and understand)
- Apply emotional intelligence to leadership (Appraise and apply)
- Ascertain how their own mindset influences their leadership (Appraise and analyse)
- Summarize how personal physiology affects personal leadership (Aggregate and analyse)
- Critique arguments related to the use of pro-social behaviour in personal leadership and developing others (Apply and evaluate)
- Critique different approaches to dealing with stress and building resilience (Apply and evaluate)
- Design an action plan that builds personal leadership capacity (Assess and create)

WorkloadIt is expected that you will spend at least six hours per week studying for this course. This will include: a three hour seminar. In addition, at least 3 hours per week of private study is needed. This time should be made up of reading, library research, working on exercises and assignments. In periods where you need to complete assignments or prepare for examinations, the workload may be greater. Over-commitment has been a cause of failure for many students. You should take the required workload into consideration when planning how to balance study with the demands of your employment and other social activities.
The course has been designed for participants who have substantial prior management experience.
