In 2024, the intensive face-to-face component of this course will be delivered 9-13 Sep.
This course will prepare you to communicate scientific issues in light of increasingly important considerations of inclusion, equity and diversity. It will increase your understanding of why these social concerns matter for science and technological applications, particularly in relation to global aspirations for Sustainable Development. The course will provide the foundations for recognising and engaging between different cultural lenses, both within science, and between science and other knowledge-systems. Building on themes and concepts from the course, you will reflect on the implications for doing science and for using science to inform publics, journalists, governments, industry, professional bodies or scientists in disciplines other than your own.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand the relevance of inclusion, equity and diversity issues for communicating science in public contexts;
- Analyse key concepts, themes and empirical examples illustrating cultural differences in doing and using science;
- Apply the broader insights to communicate a concrete case of scientific or technological endeavour to a public audience in a cross-culturally informed way;
- Develop a research proposal to investigate a cross-cultural approach to a case study of science communication, and report on findings.

Workload
The expected workload will consist of approximately 130 hours throughout the session including:
- Intensive face-to face component over 5 days Monday-Friday including lectures plus seminars.
- Approximately 95 hours of self-directed study which will include complementary readings, assignments and maintaining a reflective journal as part of the course.
