This course focuses on the integration of concept and processes in hot shop based projects. Demonstrations and course assignments introduce advanced hot glass techniques, from Venetian techniques to hot blow moulds; trouble-shooting methods and experimental approaches to working with hot glass. Lectures and group discussions expend students' knowledge of hot glass applications in contemporary practices in the fields of craft, design and visual arts. Occupational health and safety instruction is integrated thought the syllabus.

  1. Competently utilise a range of intermediate and advanced glass blowing and finishing skills in response to set tasks
  2. Demonstrate an analytical approach to conceptualizing objects for realization in the hot shop
  3. Experiment while integrating concepts and processes through self directed glass blowing and cold working projects
  4. Critically engage with historical and theoretical contexts as introduced through integrated glass studio theory

Indicative Assessment

Portfolio of studio work (80%) [LO 1, 2, 3]

and Journal/Documentation/Studio Theory presentation (20%) [LO 3, 4].

Feedback on work in progress is provided during class and at mid semester review session. Final assessment will be based on presented completed works, journals, tests and models.

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

4 hours per week supervised studio practice includes hands on instruction, lectures and group discussion. 6 hours per week independent studio practice includes a minimum of 1 (3 hour) self-directed hot shop session, shared with blowing partner.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be studying a Bachelor of visual arts degree and have successfully completed ARTV2003 or ARTV2303, or both ARTV2313 and ARTV2314. Also, you are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed ARTV2304 or ARTV2004 or DESA2304 or DESA3001 or DESA2309.
