The Honours Specialisation in Science Communication is a unique opportunity to investigate how an aspect of science that you are passionate about:
- Has been communicated in the public arena.
- Might be communicated better.
- Is affected by such things as government policy and community opinion.
The kinds of projects that are possible are limited only by your imagination and your interests. The very best projects come from original ideas, initiated by enthusiastic people who are interested in some aspect of science and in how it is communicated.
Learning Outcomes
- Plan
and engage in an independent and sustained critical investigation and evaluation
of a chosen research topic to generate new knowledge
- Systematically identify relevant theory and concepts, relate these to appropriate methodologies and evidence, and draw appropriate conclusions
- Engage in systematic discovery and critical review of appropriate and relevant information sources
- Analyse and interpret original research data with statistical or other evaluative processes where appropriate
- Understand and apply ethical standards of conduct in the collection and evaluation of data and other resources
- Communicate and justify complex concepts and results clearly and effectively to a variety of audiences.

Admission Requirements
Satisfaction of the admission requirements described in the relevant honours plan:
- with at least 4 courses in science communication or related to the proposed research area with at least 2 3000-level courses or equivalent
- And with the written approval of an identified supervisor for the research project.
Requirements
The Science Communication Honours specialisation requires the completion of 48 units, which must consist of:
42 units from completion of SCOM4005 Thesis and Seminar in Science Communication, which must be undertaken more than once, in consecutive semesters
6 units from completion of a course from the following list:
SCOM4014 Communicating Science with the Public
SCOM4015 Speaking of Science
SCOM4501 Strategies in Science Communication
HONS4600 Final Honours Grade will be used to calculate the Class of Honours and the Mark. It will be calculated using the formula: Σ (mark x units) / Σ units, giving NCN and WN a nominal mark of zero.
