This course is designed to enable students to develop skills in writing about their research-led creative practice. It provides students with skills in exegetical writing necessary for the composition of the exegesis that accompanies their performance or composition, arranging, or sound design. The course addresses different ways in which students may reflect on their creative practice, and will examine different possible approaches to articulate this in written form.

  1. Explore different approaches to the articulation, in written form, of their reflection on their creative practice
  2. Apply appropriate methods of writing about creative musical activities specific to the student's performance and compositional activities.
  3. Critically evaluate the writings of others on creative practice
  4. Communicate effectively and succinctly through oral presentation
 

Indicative Assessment

A 20-minute oral presentation, either taking the form of a lecture-presentation on the student's creative practice as research, or a critical evaluation of other materials presented in this unit. (10%) (Outcomes 1-4).
 
An exegesis proposal and plan (10%) (500 words) (Outcomes 1-3)
 
A written exegesis of the research topic realised through the creative work presented within Thesis THES8105 (80%) (5000-6000 words). (Outcomes 1-3)

 

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

130 hours of total student learning time made up from: a) 36 hours of seminars; and, b) 94 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed MUSI7001 or MUSI7002. Incompatible with MUSI4404.

Assumed Knowledge

Students will need to have experience of creative practice in music, in either performance or composition, involving critical analysis and reflection.
