This independent extended research project allows students to apply the conceptual and methodological skills they have developed in the area of cultural and environmental heritage to a particular research question or case study linked to their academic or professional interests.

Where the project involves travel outside of Canberra (including to other parts of the ACT), students will only be permitted to travel upon completion of ANU required documentation and the approval of all documentation by the relevant delegate.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. Communicate concepts for a variety of relevant academic and / or professional purposes;
  2. Apply theoretical ideas to case studies developed from personal observation;
  3. Conduct data-collection and analysis for humanities research and museum work;
  4. Write a research project that applies conceptual and methodological skills that addresses a particular research question or case study; and
  5. Model best practice and have a commitment to ethical, reflective practice in regard to heritage studies.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Written assessment (or equivalent project-based work), 10000-12,000 words (100%) [Learning Outcomes 1-5] (100) [LO 1,2,3,4,5]
  2. The nature of the inquiry will be established at the commencement of the teaching period through a written proposal that will be developed in consultation between the student and supervising lecturer. This proposal is not summatively assessed (it has zero percent weighting) but is a compulsory hurdle requirement for completion of the course. (null) [LO null]

Workload

260 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 12 hours of contact over 12 weeks of supervisory meetings; and
b) 248 hours of independent student research, reading and writing.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must be enrolled in the Masters of Museum and Heritage Studies MMUHS or VMUHS and completed 24 units of courses or be enrolled in an MPhil or PhD program. You will need to contact the School to request permission code to enrol.
