This course explores approaches to painting via processes of drawing, collage, photography, and digital imaging, and emphasises the role of colour in composition. A series of exercises and projects students will learn the basic terminology and principles of painting, for example the dynamics of composition, the relations between picture plane and picture space, between colour and tone, illusion and materiality, etc. Students take skills learned in the first part of the course and develop an independent project in the second half of the course. Work health and safety (WHS) instruction is an integral component of this course.

- demonstrate an understanding of a range of approaches to composition and pictorial design;
- show a creative exploration of painting materials and processes;
- demonstrate and awareness of historical and theoretical contexts relevant to the course; and
- devise and implement an independent studio project.

Workload130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact over 12 weeks: lectures, tutorials, critiques, and supervised studio practice; and
b) 82 hours of independent studio practice, reading and writing.
