Students will learn the structure of glaze and the development of colour in a variety of glaze types and finishes. The development of the glaze and colour will be through various testing methodologies for example line blend, tri-axil blend, square blend & colour blends. The testing & development program will lead to the student developing their own palette of glazes. Workplace Health and Safety (WHS) instruction is an integral part of this course.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion, students will have the knowledge and skills to:

  1. competently utilise a range of skills relevant to Ceramic Glaze and Colour development in response to Workshop projects;
  2. explore the potential of material/s used in Ceramic Glaze and Colour projects;
  3. investigate the inventive application of concepts and processes in relation to Glazes and Colour; and
  4. engage with historical and theoretical contexts relevant to Ceramic projects

Other Information

School of Art & Design studio courses have a limited enrolment capacity. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible to maximise the opportunity of securing a place.

Indicative Assessment

  1. Glaze testing program & studio work (80) [LO 1,2,3,4]
  2. Documentation (contextual research and technical notes) (10) [LO 2,3,4]
  3. Studio theory presentation, 8 minutes, and submission of presentation (10) [LO 4]
  4. Assessment will be based on the Rubric for this course. Assessment includes periodic critique and review sessions that provide ongoing feedback on work in progress. (null) [LO null]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. Workload

This course may be delivered in either semester mode or intensive mode:

Semester mode
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact: 4 hours of lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice per week for 12 weeks.
b) 82 hours of independent student practice (testing and firing) and research.

Intensive mode
130 hours of total student learning time made up from:
a) 48 hours of contact: intensive classes held over a period of 3 weeks, comprising lectures, tutorials, critiques and supervised studio practice.
b) 82 hours of independent student practice (testing and firing) and research.

You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed any of the following courses: ARTV2103, ARTV2003, DESA2002, DESA2103 or DESA2106.
