This course is designed for students who have completed Intermediate Greek or its equivalent. In any one semester students will read a whole text by a single author or a selection of texts (following a theme, or as an investigation of a genre). The aim will be to read the text, to discuss its content, and to appreciate it as a work of literature, or a work of history. During the semester students will revise aspects of language usage which they may find difficult and will complete language exercises, literary exercises, an essay, and a final examination.

This course will develop their skills in reading and comprehension of Ancient Greek.

  1. Identify  grammatical constructions and remember significant vocabulary.
  2. Demonstrate Ancient Greek language skills by reading with understanding some passages of the author studied at sight; other passages with the aid of a dictionary and a commentary.
  3. Analyse the compositional style of the author studied and understand the impact of this style on the audience or reader.
  4. Set the text studied in its historical, social and cultural context.

Indicative Assessment

Mid-semester test (15%) [LO's 1, 2, 3, 4]

Final three-hour exam (40%) [LO's 1, 2, 3, 4]

The ANU uses Turnitin to enhance student citation and referencing techniques, and to assess assignment submissions as a component of the University's approach to managing Academic Integrity. While the use of Turnitin is not mandatory, the ANU highly recommends Turnitin is used by both teaching staff and students. Workload

Three one-hour meetings per week and another seven hours of associated study time.

Requisite and Incompatibility

To enrol in this course you must have completed GREK6101. You are not able to enrol in this course if you have previously completed GREK2125. Alternatively you may gain permission of the Course Convener to enrol in this course.
