This course is designed for students who have completed Intermediate Greek or its equivalent. In any one semester students will read a whole text by a single author or a selection of texts (following a theme, or as an investigation of a genre). The aim will be to read the text, to discuss its content, and to appreciate it as a work of literature, or a work of history. During the semester students will revise aspects of language usage which they may find difficult and will complete language exercises, literary exercises, an essay, and a final examination.
This course will develop their skills in reading and comprehension of Ancient Greek.

- Identify grammatical constructions and remember significant vocabulary.
- Demonstrate Ancient Greek language skills by reading with understanding some passages of the author studied at sight; other passages with the aid of a dictionary and a commentary.
- Analyse the compositional style of the author studied and understand the impact of this style on the audience or reader.
- Set the text studied in its historical, social and cultural context.
