A basic knowledge of the workings of language can be a useful adjunct to many areas of study, including any foreign language, literature, anthropology, philosophy, computer science, or psychology.  This minor builds on the introduction to linguistics (1001), which may be taken on its own are as part of another major or minor, to allow further study of some of the sub-areas of linguistics.

Learning Outcomes

  1. demonstrate a basic understanding of the nature of the structures found across human languages
  2. demonstrate a basic understanding of how people use languages to communicate, and of the role of language in human society and in communication across cultures
  3. describe some of the most important sorts of variation found in human languages
  4. conduct basic linguistic analysis applying quantitative and/or qualitative methods
  5. evaluate popular beliefs and arguments concerning language use and language diversity
