This major is only available to students undertaking the Bachelor of Visual Arts.
The Textiles major provides for a broad range of textile studies, studio practice and research, and prepares students for careers as textile artists, designers, small business producers, teachers, curators, community artists and for employment in public art. With active academic staff, excellent technical facilities and located close to Australia's national collecting institutions, the Workshop provides an excellent study environment. Creative and innovative approaches to textiles based on a thorough technical understanding of the medium and knowledge of the historical and contemporary context are presented. Concept, ideas and design development parallels technical training, allowing students to develop individual approaches.
School of Art & Design studio courses have a limited enrolment capacity. Students are advised to enrol as early as possible to maximise the opportunity of securing a place.
Learning Outcomes
- demonstrate an understanding and application of the practices, languages, forms, materials, technologies and techniques in textile making;
- realise artefacts and forms of creative expression;
- develop and evaluate concepts and process by thinking creatively, critically and reflectively;
- work independently and collaboratively in a workshop environment in response to project demands; and
- apply workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations and principles within a workshop environment.
Requirements
This major requires the completion of 48 units from the following lists, which must include:
A maximum of 12 units of courses at 1000 level
A minimum of 12 units of courses at 3000 level
24 units from the completion of the following compulsory courses:
ARTV3028 - Developing a Contemporary Craft Practice (6 units)
ARTV3029 - Resolving a Body of Original Contemporary Craft Work (6 units)
ARTV2060 - Contexts of Making: Globalisation and Change (6 units)
ARTV2061 - Contexts of Making: Materiality and Value (6 units)
A minimum of 6 untis must come from completion of introductory studio courses from the following list:
ARTV1901 - Textiles: Dye and Surface Manipulation (6 units)
ARTV1902 - Textiles: Print and Surface Design (6 units)
A minimum of 12 units must come from completion of intermediate studio courses from the following list:
ARTV2906 - Textiles: Approaches to Drawing for Craft and Design (6 units)
ARTV2907 - Textiles: Embroidery and Hand Stitch (6 units)
ARTV2908 - Textiles: Constructed Textiles (6 units)
ARTV2909 - Textiles: Maker to Market (6 units)
ARTV2911 - Textiles: Experimental Practices (6 units)
